Benefits of Choosing Upper Bay Sailing School
For Your Sailing Lessons
- Small Class Sizes -- Adults learn by doing. Our class size
averages 3 students per boat and is always 4 or less. This gives you more
time sailing the boat -- the only way to really learn sailing. You will
also get more time with your instructor to answer your questions and assure you
are learning your way.
- Top Instructors -- Sailing lessons are only as good as the
sailing instructor teaching; we pride ourselves in hiring the very best
instructors. Two of our instructors have won ASA's "Instructor of the Year
Award", three others have run their own sailing schools, and all of our
instructors have USCG licenses. All of our instructors are ASA certified
through Bareboat Chartering and many through Advanced Sailing Instruction or
Catamaran Instruction. Can any other sailing school on the Chesapeake Bay
match that level of experience?
- The Best Yachts -- Different size boats handle differently.
The best sailing instruction is on a boat approximately the size you will sail.
Want to day charter? A boat in the 28-32 foot range is perfect.
Looking for a longer bareboat charter? A 35-45 footer is better. We
have carefully selected vessels to provide the ideal classroom for sailing
instruction. Reliability is jst as important,
fthat is why we chose are vessels from the most reliable manufacturers (Island Packet, Leopard, Bavaria, Columbia)
and with all the equipments you'll expect (roller furling, anchor windlass, bimini top, full electronics etc.). No other sailing school lets you learn on
the same top of the line yachts as Upper Bay Sailing School.
- Live Aboard Classes-- We teach all our classes on yachts with
beds (berths), kitchens (galleys), and bathrooms (heads). Since we teach
exclusively on yachts, not dinghies like some other schools, all of our classes
are in the live aboard format. This maximizes your time aboard as well as
your time with the instructor. In addition, you avoid hotel costs that can
be $100 or more per night -- no school teaching on dinghies can provide you so
much!
- Outstanding Value -- Our classes are the best value on
the Chesapeake Bay and our BVI classes are the best value in the Caribbean.
We are in these locations because we love to sail and we want to share this passion with you
in a long term sailing relationship. Many other schools don't expect you back, so they raise the price of sailing instruction by adding unnecessary time (and expense)
to pad the price. Our experience has taught us the ideal length of each
sailing lesson so we offer the perfect amount of time to properly teach without the waste or
high price. We believe that offering the
best value will have you come back for advanced sailing instruction and charters with us. To
further add value to you, we offer all of our sailing lessons as live-aboards
(no hotel costs) and linens, towels, pillows, blankets and berth at night are always included;
and we include on-board meals with all classes including ASA 104, 106 and 114.

Upper Bay Sailing School Offers the Best Value
Check us out before making your final decision and discover the best values
for sailing instruction on the entire Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean. We also provide the best values for Bareboat Charters.
When you select a sailing school or charter boat service be particularly careful that you consider the following:
-
Small dinghies 22 to 25 ft in length tend to be crowded with as few as 3 students and an instructor in the cockpit all trying at the same time to avoid the
low and dangerous boom during a come about or a jibe. Big boat sailing
techniques are quite different, so if your plan is to own or bareboat charter a
boat greater than 28 ft you might as well start learning on a boat similar to
the one you will sail. Also be sure the the dinghies have heads (marine
toilets) aboard.
Our vessels are ideal for the Chesapeake Bay. We have specified modern bulb keels and classic fully battened mainsails that offer versatility as regards to sail trim and extra power when reaching.
Be very careful that you select a location that has plenty of open water yet is relatively free of power boat traffic. On weekends, locations such as Annapolis and Baltimore become over crowded with power boats. The result, believe it or not, is that the water becomes very churned up and choppy. This becomes an obstacle to learning, especially in light airs, for beginners.
Also, make sure the location for your class has easy and quick access to open water. Otherwise you may spend 1-2 hours each day motoring to the point where you can start sailing.
-
If your goal is to bare boat charter or to own a boat keep in mind that a school that offers bareboat chartering will make sure that you are properly trained. Schools that do not offer bareboat chartering may not teach to the same higher standard.
Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding our sailing classes or charter boat services.
